The Milwaukee Kendo Club posted a set of plans to make a striking dummy. The plans can be downloaded here as a PDF. We built one. It looks like this.
Clearly designed for striking the right side, as all samurai fought right handed. Having successfully followed the plans, we decided to build a second striking dummy. This one with both shoulders and arms, along with the ability to hold a weapon. It turned out like this.
Either Arnis sticks or a bokken can be held. Cuts and strikes to both sides of the dummy can made can be made with speed and power, unlike working with an uke, where the cut or strike must be moderated. We have only begun to explore the usefulness of these props but they are already showing promise with weapons practice.
